Strengthening the HERMES Historical Cultures and History Education Research Network

Funding Body: Faculty of Education and Arts, The University of Newcastle
Scheme: Strategic Networks and Pilot Projects Scheme
Period: January 1 – November 30 2014

Project Description:
HERMES is an interdisciplinary historical cultures and History education research network concentrated within the University of Newcastle, but committed to developing strategic national partnerships and international collaborations and alliances. The proposed network activity aims to consolidate HERMES’ strategic international connection with Dr Paul Zanazanian from Canada, with whom a grant application for external funding will be developed that seeks to capitalise on national priorities for understanding Asia. The proposed activity also includes seeding a generative pilot project, Remembering Australia’s Past (RAP), which will strengthen the group’s track record for successful collaboration and co-authored publication, in anticipation of applications for competitive external grant funding. HERMES members have already been instrumental in the establishment of an open source peer reviewed journal with an outstanding international advisory board; a History Network for Teachers and Researchers (HNTR), currently in excess of 185 members; and a Special Interest Group for ‘History and Education’ in the Australian Association for Research in Education (AARE). These activities have established HERMES as an emerging force in History Education Research, and the proposed activities will strengthen HERMES’ competitiveness for external funding, through consolidation of collective track record and strategic collaboration.
