Three Pathways to Becoming a History Teacher!

There are a number of different pathways into becoming a History Teacher, depending on whether or not you have already completed university studies.

UNDERGRADUATE INITIAL TEACHING DEGREE

History Teaching Degree LinkThe Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. You will qualify as a History teacher by selecting appropriate discipline and specialist curriculum studies units. Graduates of this teaching degree will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers, and able to seek employment as 7-12 secondary teachers in and beyond the New South Wales (NSW) Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors. The degree can be studied full-time (4 years) or part-time.

There is even an elective course open to students in any undergraduate degree, Historical Consciousness, Public Memory, and Nation Building, that students can take in addition to their compulsory studies.

POSTGRADUATE INITIAL TEACHING DEGREE

Using your existing degree as a foundation, the Master of Teaching (Secondary) at the University of Newcastle is a two year program, producing highly competent and fully qualified graduates ready to enter a rewarding career as a secondary teacher.

Throughout the program you will examine the key concepts and theories from educational philosophy, psychology and sociology as they relate to teaching and learning, explore language as a social practice, the principles and practice of quality teaching, the integration of new technologies into learning and curriculum essentials for the discipline/s you are preparing to teach. To effectively prepare you for the job you will undertake 60 days professional experience in school settings. You will qualify as a History teacher if you have completed the requisite studies in your undergraduate degree; and by selecting appropriate specialist curriculum studies units in the Master of Teaching program.

Graduates of the Master of Teaching (Secondary) degree will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers. Graduates can also seek employment with the Department of Education and Training, Catholic education and independent school systems within Australian and overseas.

ADDING HISTORY TEACHING TO YOUR EXISTING QUALIFICATIONS

The University of Newcastle currently provides a Master of Educational Studies program that includes a History Education specialisation, conducted in alliance with the Australian National University. The History Education specialisation has been designed as a vehicle for professional renewal (for qualified Primary Teachers or Secondary History Teachers) and/or professional upgrade (for qualified secondary teachers who didn’t study history as an undergraduate, and want to add 7-12 Modern History as an additional teaching area).

ENROLLING IN COURSES

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:

Applicants should discuss their professional renewal or additional accreditation goals with the History Specialisation Coordinator – Dr Robert Parkes before enrolling in courses. Depending on what you have already completed in your previous university studies, you may not have to complete the same number of units in the History discipline as is specified above (and may be able to take free electives instead). Only an assessment from the Specialisation Coordinator will be able to confirm that.

You should also check what the requirements are to qualify as a History Teacher – if that is your goal – with the relevant accreditation, registration, or employment authorities in your region. A program can then be mapped to your jurisdictional needs as required.

Please Note: The information provided here is for INFORMATION ONLY. You must consult the University of Newcastle or Gradschool.com.au website for official details.
